Lent- Terce

Terce (9:00 A.M. - Mid-morning)

V. In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

R. Amen.

V. O Lord, open thou our lips.

R. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise.

V. Receive, O Lord, our prayers this hour

R. The offering to you of this day. Amen

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God

Most Gracious and Loving God,

We confess that we have sinned against thee

and done what is evil in thy sight;

That we have turned from thy ways

both in things done and left undone;

A period of silence for reflection may follow.

Wherefore we beseech thee O Lord,

Have mercy upon us; forgive us all our sins.

Cast us not away from thy presence

But cleanse us with thy Spirit;

That we may walk in newness of life;

And this we ask in the Name of thy Son

Our savior, Jesus Christ. Amen

O Lord, we beseech thee, mercifully hear our prayers, and grant us Absolution and Remission of all our sins, true repentance; amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of Thy Holy Spirit. Amen.

V. O Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from this body of death?

R. Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!

V. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

A Selection from the Psalter or

One or more of the Psalms below is read

Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.

 106 I have sworn, and I will confirm it, that I will keep Thy righteous ordinances.

 107 I am exceedingly afflicted; revive me, O LORD, according to Thy word.

 108 O accept the freewill offerings of my mouth, O LORD, and teach me Thine ordinances.

 109 My life is continually in my hand, yet I do not forget Thy law.

 110 The wicked have laid a snare for me, yet I have not gone astray from Thy precepts.

 111 I have inherited Thy testimonies forever, for they are the joy of my heart.

 112 I have inclined my heart to perform Thy statutes forever, even to the end.

V. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Psalm 51:7 Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

 8 Make me to hear joy and gladness, Let the bones which Thou hast broken rejoice.

 9 Hide Thy face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

 11 Do not cast me away from Thy presence, and do not take Thy Holy Spirit from me.

 12 Restore to me the joy of Thy salvation, and sustain me with a willing spirit.

 13 Then I will teach transgressors Thy ways, and sinners will be converted to Thee.

V. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Psalm 9:7 The LORD abides forever; He has established His throne for judgment,

 8 And He will judge the world in righteousness; He will execute judgment for the peoples with equity.

 9 The LORD also will be a stronghold for the oppressed, A stronghold in times of trouble,

 10 And those who know Thy name will put their trust in Thee; For Thou, O LORD, hast not forsaken those who seek Thee.

11 Sing praises to the LORD, who dwells in Zion; declare among the peoples His deeds.

  12 For he who avenges blood is mindful of them; he does not forget the cry of the afflicted.

13 Be gracious to me, O LORD; Behold my affliction from those who hate me, Thou who dost lift me up from the gates of death;

 14 That I may tell of all Thy praises; that in the gates of the daughter of Zion, I may rejoice in Thy salvation.

V. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Scripture Reading

The following short lessons or another suitable passage is read

Joel 2:12 "Yet even now," declares the LORD, "Return to Me with all your heart, And with fasting, weeping, and mourning; 13 and rend your heart and not your garments." Now return to the LORD your God, For He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness, and relenting of evil.

R. Thanks be to God.

Ephesians 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

R. Thanks be to God.

2 Corinthians 5:18 Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ, and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were entreating through us, “we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God”.

R. Thanks be to God.

V. The Spirit Himself beareth witness with our spirit.

R. That we are the children of God.

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

V. Let us pray.

The Kyrie may be said in place of the Lord’s Prayer provided the Lord’s Prayer is said once during the morning hours and once during the evening hours

V. Lord, have mercy upon us.

 R. Christ, have mercy upon us.

 V. Lord, have mercy upon us.

OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

V. O Lord, hear our prayer.

R. And let our cry come unto Thee.

V. Let us pray.

Here at least two prayers are said: the Collect of the day (from the past Sunday or specific for the day) and the first prayer provided below

If the Collect be already said, a prayer from the Additional Collects may be used or both prayers provided below may be used

ALMIGHTY God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified; Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O GOD, Who at this third hour, didst ascend Thy holy Cross to enlighten the world from darkness; may it please Thee to shine forth the light of Thy grace upon us, and so renew us in heart and body, that we may serve Thee faithfully and love Thee truly, Thou Savior of the world, Who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

O Lord, who at this same hour didst also pour out thy Holy Spirit upon Thy Church at Pentecost, direct and further us, we beseech Thee, with the continual help of the same Holy Spirit; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in thee, we may glorify thy holy Name, and finally, by thy mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

V. Bless the Lord.

R. Thanks be to God.

THE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.
