Compline (Just before Bed)

V. Receive, O Lord, our prayers this hour

R. The offering to you of this day. Amen.

R. The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.  Amen.

V. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R. Thanks be to God.

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God

We confess to God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, that we have sinned in thought, word and deed, through our own grievous fault. Wherefore we pray God to have mercy upon us.

A period of silence for reflection follows.

Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us all our sins and deliver us from all evil,  confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and bring us to life everlasting; through Jesus Christ  our Lord. Amen.

O Lord, we beseech thee, mercifully hear our prayers, and grant us Absolution and Remission of all our sins, true repentance; amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of Thy Holy Spirit. Amen.

V. O God, make speed to save us.

R. O Lord, make haste to help us.

V. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

V. Praise ye the Lord.

R. The Lord's name be praised.

Psalm 4:1 Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! Thou hast relieved me in my distress; Be gracious to me and hear my prayer.

2 O sons of men, how long will my honor become a reproach? How long will you love what is  worthless and aim at deception?

3 But know that the LORD has set apart the godly man for Himself; The LORD hears when I call to Him.

 4 Tremble, and do not sin; Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.

 5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and trust in the LORD.

 6 Many are saying, "Who will show us any good?" Lift up the light of Thy countenance upon us, O LORD!

 7 Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than when their grain and new wine abound.

 8 In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for Thou alone, O LORD, dost make me to dwell in safety.

V. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Psalm 31:1 In Thee, O LORD, I have taken refuge; Let me never be ashamed; In Thy righteousness deliver me.

2 Incline Thine ear to me, rescue me quickly; Be Thou to me a rock of strength, A stronghold to save me.

3 For Thou art my rock and my fortress; For Thy name's sake Thou wilt lead me and guide me.

4 Thou wilt pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me; For Thou art my strength.

5 Into Thy hand I commit my spirit; Thou hast ransomed me, O LORD, God of truth.

6 I hate those who regard vain idols; But I trust in the LORD.

V. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Psalm 33:4 The word of the LORD is upright; and all His work is done in faithfulness.

 5 He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the lovingkindness of the LORD.

 6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their host.

 7 He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap; He lays up the deeps in storehouses.

 8 Let all the earth fear the LORD; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.

 9 For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.

 10 The LORD nullifies the counsel of the nations; He frustrates the plans of the peoples.

 11 The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of His heart from generation to generation.

V. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Collects (Prayers)

O Lord Jesus Christ, who at this evening hour didst rest in the sepulcher, and didst thereby sanctify the grave to be a bed of hope to thy people: grant that we, who were baptized into thy death and raised up with thee in thy resurrection, may rest in thee this night and wake tomorrow, to thy mercies which are new every morning; Great is thy faithfulness, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end.  Amen.

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we implore thy grace and protection for the ensuing day. Keep us temperate in all things, and diligent in our several callings. Grant us patience under our afflictions. Give us grace to be just and upright in all our dealings; quiet and peaceable; full of compassion; faithful in witness; and ready to do good to all men. Direct us in all our ways. Defend us from all dangers and adversities; and be graciously pleased to take us, and all who are dear to us, under thy fatherly care and protection. These things we humbly beg, through the merits and mediation of thy Son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Visit, we beseech thee, O Lord, this place, and drive from it all the snares of the enemy;  let thy holy angels dwell herein to preserve us in peace; and may thy blessing be upon us evermore;  through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ.  Amen.
