Advent-Epiphany Vespers

V. In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

 R. Amen.

V. O Lord, open thou our lips.

R. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise.

V. Receive, O Lord, our prayers this hour

R. The offering to you of this day. Amen

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God

ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father;

We have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep.

We have offended against thy holy laws;

And there is no health in us.

A period of silence for reflection may follow.

But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us;

Forgive us all our sins,

And grant that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life,

To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

O Lord, we beseech thee, mercifully hear our prayers, and grant us Absolution and Remission of all our sins, true repentance; amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of Thy Holy Spirit. Amen.

V. O God, make speed to save us.

R. O Lord, make haste to help us.

 V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

 R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Psalmody

A Selection from the Psalter or

One or more of the Psalms below is read

Psalm 16:1 Preserve me, O God, for I take refuge in Thee.

 2 I said to the LORD, "Thou art my Lord; I have no good besides Thee."

 3 As for the saints who are in the earth, they are the majestic ones in whom is all my delight.

 4 The sorrows of those who have bartered for another god will be multiplied; I shall not pour out their libations of blood, nor shall I take their names upon my lips.

 5 The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; Thou dost support my lot.

 6 The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; indeed, my heritage is beautiful to me.

 7 I will bless the LORD who has counseled me; indeed, my mind instructs me in the night.

 8 I have set the LORD continually before me; Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

V. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

 R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Psalm 113:1 Praise the LORD! Praise, O servants of the LORD. Praise the name of the LORD.

 2 Blessed be the name of the LORD From this time forth and forever.

 3 From the rising of the sun to its setting the name of the LORD is to be praised.

 4 The LORD is high above all nations; His glory is above the heavens.

 5 Who is like the LORD our God, Who is enthroned on high,

 6 Who humbles Himself to behold the things that are in heaven and in the earth?

 7 He raises the poor from the dust, and lifts the needy from the ash heap,

 8 To make them sit with princes, with the princes of His people.

 9 He makes the barren woman abide in the house as a joyful mother of children. Praise the LORD!

V. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

 R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Psalm 40:6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire-- but my ears you have opened-- burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require.

 7 Then I said, "Behold, I come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me;

 8 I delight to do Thy will, O my God; Thy Law is within my heart."

 9 I have proclaimed glad tidings of righteousness in the great congregation; behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O LORD.

10 I have not hidden Thy righteousness within my heart; I have spoken of Thy faithfulness and Thy salvation; I have not concealed Thy lovingkindness and Thy truth from the great congregation.

 11 Thou, O LORD, wilt not withhold Thy compassion from me; Thy lovingkindness and Thy truth will continually preserve me.

V. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

 R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Scripture Reading

The following short lessons or another suitable passage is read

Luke 2:10 And the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which shall be for all the people; 11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

 R. Thanks be to God.

1 John 4:9 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

R. Thanks be to God.

Deuteronomy 6:6 "And these words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart; 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.

R. Thanks be to God.

V. Lord let my prayer be counted as incense before Thee;

R. And the lifting up of my hands as the evening offering.

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with thy spirit.

V. Let us pray.

The Kyrie may be said in place of the Lord’s Prayer provided the Lord’s Prayer is said once during the morning hours and once during the evening hours

OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

V. O Lord, hear our prayer.

 R. And let our cry come unto Thee.

 V. Let us pray.

If the Collect be already said, a prayer from the Additional Collects may be used or both prayers provided below may be used

O Lord, who hast vouchsafed to redeem us by thy Blood and to bring us safely through this day; grant in these waning hours that our thoughts may be drawn to thee; so in joyful occupation and quiet meditation we may be refreshed from all our labors; this we ask in thy name, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we do give Thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and lovingkindness to us this day; And, we beseech thee, grant us the continual presence and help of thy Holy Spirit; that no unclean thoughts, unlawful designs, or inordinate desires, may be found within us this night; but that we may go to our rest in peace, and be preserved pure and blameless, unto the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

V. Let Thy Saints be joyful in Thy glory.

R. Let all who take refuge in Thee be glad.

V. Bless the Lord.

THE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen.
